Today I’m an Alcatraz Fan

In Uncategorized on January 28, 2012 at 4:36 pm

Is anyone else watching the new show “Alcatraz” on FOX?! I had set the DVR to record the series when it started a couple of weeks ago, but just got around to watching today.

Apprently, the 302 prisoners and guards of Alcatraz in 1963 when they shut down “The Rock,” are all making a comeback wreaking havoc on the bay area. They have not aged a day in 50 years and seem to be continuing their bad-ass tendencies.

What appealed to me initially, 1960s Alcatraz prisoners, has been blown out to include modern day crimes. The suspense is there, mystery, intrigue, revenge, evil, awkward humor (Thanks, Jorge Garcia!) and Sam Neill.

Hat’s off to J.J. Abrams et al for making another winner in my book. At least so far.

Today I’m a Lazy Bum

Ever have one of those days when you just didn’t want to do anything? Well, at least not anything very productive? That was today.

Officially, the kids were on spring break this week. They spent the first two days at grandpa and grandma’s, then I worked from home for a day and half, while my husband was home with them for the last day and a half. In hindsight, it might have been easier to plan a vacation.

In the end, it was a messed-up-schedules-are-wrong-stupid-time-change kind of week. I just decided to take the day off — watching movies/TV, listening to my son practice piano, working with my daughter in her KidWalk, reading a book, going for a chilly run/walk, and ordering in pizza.

Oh, and for the record, I’m actually wearing a hat today, too!

Today I’m a List Maker

As I get older, I can’t help but notice how much more quickly time seems to slip away. Today I took the time to reflect on the type of things that I did to keep busy (or relax) over the past five days — outside of the doctors’ visits and NASA Tour, of course. Here’s just a little insight as to how I spent my long, holiday weekend.*

Brushing the cat
Checking email
Crossword puzzles
Doing laundry
Eating
Facebook
Feeding my daughter
Fixing breakfast (No, I did NOT cook any dinners/lunches)
Helping my son with homework
Napping
Packing
Reading
Rubik’s cube
Shopping
Surfing the web
Swimming
Talking on the phone
Texting friends
Twitter
Watching a movie
Watching TV
Writing my blog

Each of the activities have only been listed once, although it is possible for some and/or many of them to have occurred multiple times throughout this particular time period. All activities appearing in this work are true to my life. Any resemblance to those of other persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental.

Today I’m a TV Critic

Dating in the Dark. Is anybody else watching this? It’s my new guilty pleasure. And best of all, it’s something I get to do with my husband. What a simple concept to test the theory — Is love blind?

For those not familiar with this ABC dating reality show, six singles (3 men and 3 women) are introduced to each other in the absolute, complete darkness of the dating room. They can’t see a thing. The camera, however, shows it all. Ultimately, they each get to go on two “dates” in the dark dating room to test their compatibility without the distraction of appearance.

The reveal? It would be too easy to simply have them meet in a well-lighted room. Instead, they set up this kind of creepy experience. Both stand awkwardly in pitch darkness until one is suddenly standing under a bright light while the other looks on. Then the roles are reversed.

So as the finale, they are each asked to make a choice: Meet your partner on the balcony or walk out the front door. After just two episodes, we’ve seen most of the couples pair up on the balcony. But it’s not always appearance that’s the deal breaker.

It’s no-brainer, escapism entertainment. It also solidifies how thankful I am to have already found my soul mate. And that he’ll watch this with me.

Today I’m a Manager

In Uncategorized on July 20, 2009 at 6:00 pm

(And sometimes a micro-manager.) Not an hour into my day at work, I knew this week was going to be a doozie. We have no less at 18 different jobs with deadlines between now and Friday. Sadly, half of those deadlines are more realistically for Tuesday or Wednesday, with tweaks and finessing to follow.

With an overworked team, I am trying to appease those asking and support those delivering. That said, I think the team is handling the pressure far better than I am today. I need to resign to the fact that there are things simply out of my control. And I should embrace that. Lord knows, as well as Jim Carrey in Bruce Almighty, that it’s best that all decisions not be left to a single person.

Tonight is one of those nights when I need to go home, kiss my husband and my kids, then relax. Be a mom. And after the kids are in bed, be selfish. Kick my feet up and decompress in front of the TV. Besides, a new episode of 4th and Long is on tonight.

Here’s to Day 1

If you stumbled upon this blog, I hope you’ll tag it and come back occasionally. If you were invited, thanks for stopping in to read and/or comment on these pages.

As an online marketing professional, I value the freedom we’ve all gained in this grand world of self-publication. And although I read blogs, I’ve never braved the terrain of creating or contributing to this fantastic genre of self-expression.

One note about the content you’ll find here: it’s likely to be all over the place. Why? Because that’s what I know. I’m a wife, mother, writer, marketer, TV junkie, movie-lover and Midwesterner-turned-Texan. Like lots of others out there, I have many roles and wear So Many Hats.

I hope you find something you can relate to. Something that makes you laugh. That reminds you of the past. That encourages you to try new things. Or maybe you’ll even find something that incites you to comment.  Either way, thanks for spending time with me today.
